Buying a second-hand vehicle? Follow our advice to stay safe and secure

West Midlands Police is encouraging motorists to take extra care when buying second-hand vehicles and to make security a priority once they have made their purchase.

Buying a used car, van or motorcycle can be a significant investment, and taking a few simple precautions can help protect buyers from fraud, stolen vehicles and future theft.

Before buying a second-hand vehicle

Whether buying privately or through a dealership, buyers should carry out appropriate checks before handing over any money.

Always check the vehicle’s details carefully and make sure the registration number, Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and information on the V5C log book are consistent.

Consider using a reputable vehicle history checking service to identify whether a vehicle has previously been reported stolen, written off or has outstanding finance attached to it.

When viewing a vehicle, be cautious if the seller wants to meet somewhere other than their home or business address, puts pressure on you to complete the purchase quickly, or offers a vehicle at a price that appears significantly below its market value.

Buyers should also:

Check the seller’s identity and address where possible.

Ask to see the original V5C registration certificate and check for signs of alteration.

Check the vehicle’s VIN in more than one location and ensure it matches the documentation.

Review the vehicle’s MOT history and mileage.

Be wary of requests for large cash payments or unusual payment methods.

Avoid paying a deposit before seeing the vehicle unless you are satisfied the seller and vehicle are genuine.

Keep copies of advertisements, receipts, messages and payment records relating to the purchase.

If something does not feel right, do not feel pressured into completing the transaction.

Protecting your vehicle from theft

Once you have purchased a vehicle, consider how you can make it less attractive to thieves.

Modern vehicles can still be targeted using a range of methods, including keyless theft, theft of keys and the use of electronic equipment.

Where appropriate, owners of keyless vehicles should consider storing keys, including spare keys, away from doors and windows and using a signal-blocking pouch. Check regularly that the pouch continues to block the key’s signal.

Visible security can also act as an effective deterrent. A steering wheel lock, gear lever lock or other approved physical security device can provide an additional layer of protection.

Motorcycle and scooter owners should use good-quality locks and secure their vehicle to an immovable object wherever possible. Using more than one type of lock can make a vehicle more difficult to steal.

Make your home security part of your vehicle security

Vehicle security starts at home.

Keep car keys and house keys out of sight and away from letterboxes, doors and windows. Never leave keys in an obvious place where they could easily be found if someone gained entry to your home.

If you have a driveway, consider additional measures such as security lighting, CCTV, a video doorbell or professionally installed driveway security.

Always lock your vehicle, even when leaving it unattended for a short period, and check that windows, doors and the boot are properly secured.

Avoid leaving valuables, bags, tools or electronic equipment on display. Where possible, remove valuable items from the vehicle overnight.

Report suspicious activity

We encourage people to remain vigilant and report suspicious behaviour involving vehicles in their neighbourhood.

If you believe a vehicle being offered for sale may be stolen or you become aware of suspicious activity linked to vehicle crime, report it to police.

Always call 999 if a crime is taking place or there is an immediate risk to someone.

Taking a few extra minutes to check a vehicle before buying it, and investing in appropriate security afterwards, can reduce the risk of becoming a victim of fraud or vehicle crime.
